United States of Amnesia | José Torres-Tama Performance

United States of Amnesia: In a System that Seduces You to Forget, Dare to Remember

In the satirical, genre-bending show, Torres-Tama channels a “shamanistic time traveler” to conjure the past and expose the present.

United States of Amnesia connects the dots across centuries — from the Three-Fifths Compromise and Indian Removal Act to Operation Wetback and Zero Tolerance immigration policies — tracing a brutal through-line of dehumanizing legislation that uplifts white supremacist thinking while exploiting Black, Brown, and Indigenous labor. Through humor and radical remembering, Torres-Tama calls out the hypocrisy of the colonial settler system and demands an awakening from the induced amnesia of empire.

“The most radical thing an artist can do today is dare to remember in a culture submerged in amnesia, lies, and misinformation,” Torres-Tama said.

Book Club and History at Greenbriar Mall

It's time to bring the book club back!

The book will be Meet Me By The Fountain by Alexandra Lange (please get a copy from your local library or bookstore). It's a fascinating history of the development of the shopping mall and what its intentions were. Yes, to sell goods but also to recreate a main street in an autopia built around cars.

Meet at Greenbriar Mall at the food court.

Opened in 1965, one of the earliest John Portman designs, the site was envisioned as a 130 acre "urban complex". with housing, goods, and services. The mall pioneered the concept of a food court (Chik Fil A opened its first store beyond the Dwarf House there). The first anchor tenant was Rich's.

The history of the mall is rich. Its future uncertain. Join us we talk about malls and this mall and meet and mingle as we revisit our teenage years of meeting by the fountain.

So Much to Do…

These organizations offer many free events for residents of all ages, in or near our community:

Atlanta Fulton Public Library (Make sure to check out their Partnership Passes for free access to The Alliance Theatre, Atlanta History Center, Shakespeare Tavern, Zoo Atlanta, and more!)

Atlanta Parks and Rec - Check out their Monthly NPU Updates for a summary of offerings, then their seasonal catalog for a more in-depth look and reserve your spot using iPARCS. In the warmer months, check out Movies in the Park.

A Farmer’s Market or Stand is open in or near NPU-T six days a week during the growing season, and every one of them doubles SNAP/EBT!

Atlanta Documenters

Atlanta Documenters maintains a calendar of government agency meetings in Atlanta and Fulton, as well as the larger region, that is an excellent resource.

In many cases it also takes notes on the conversations and content presented at those meetings.
